SX52 Accessing the Rail Corridor is an induction training package specifically designed for persons working in the Sydney Metropolitan area. This program introduces participants to the key generic hazards of operating in a rail environment.

Transport for NSW (TfNSW) is moving their authorised rail contractor workforce from Rail Industry Safety Induction (RISI) cards to the nation Rail Industry Worker Card (RIW) solution.

All contractors who currently hold a RISI card must get a RIW card with the Transport for NSW recognised RIW roles by 1st of December 2015.  Your RISI card will not be recognised after this date.

All contractors entering the rail corridor, whose activities will, or have the potential to enter the danger zone, must hold a valid Rail Industry Worker Card issued by Onsite Track Easy (administered by Pegasus). The valid Rail Industry Worker Card must contain the "Around the Track Personnel" and "Transport for NSW -Operator" roles.

Existing RIW cardholders must have the TfNSW role added to their card. They will not get a new card.

Entry Requirements

To participate in the SX52 course you must have at least a Category 3 Rail Medical.

Must be able to read, speak and comprehend basic English.

You must provide 100 points of identification on the day of the course

Applicants under 17 years of age are required to apply for Rail Safety Worker Authorisation from Transport for NSW prior to enrolling a candidate into the TfNSW SX52 Accessing the Rail Corridor Induction.

Please Note: Eligibility for a TfNSW Rail Safety Worker (RISI) Authorisation must be obtained in writing from TfNSW Organisational Development (OD) before the candidate can participate in training.  This can take up to 10 working days on receipt of the applicable form.

Upon Completion

Upon successful completion of this course you will receive:

  • A Statement of Attainment recognising completion of TLIF2080 Safely access the rail corridor
Assessment Type

This course requires completion of a written theory assessment and a practical Assessment.

  • Theory Assessment: During the in-class training you will be required to sit a written theory assessment.
  • Practical Assessment: The final Assessment is one-on-one simulation and requires you to demonstrate your knowledge gained through the day.

Track Machine Operator

Content

TMO is a qualification previously known as Hi-rail. 

Track Machine Operator Medium/Heavy Requires the skills and knowledge to travel a medium or heavy self-propelled track vehicle on a rail network in accordance with the network owner’s policies and procedures

Track Machine Operator Light Requires the skills and knowledge to propel and operate light on-track equipment. Light on-track equipment is considered to be less than 10 tonnes that may be lifted on or off track mechanically

Duration

Initial TMO training is a day course which requires you to complete an On Job Workbook and further competency assessment.

Rail Industry Worker Requirements

Rail Industry Worker (RIW) Role: Rail Bound Plant Operator and/or Road-Rail Plant Operator

The mandatory requirements for the Rail Bound Plant Operator and Road-Rail Plant Operator are as follows:

  • Category 1 Rail Medical
  • CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry (White Card)
  • TLIF2080 Safely Access the Rail Corridor
  • TLIW2001 Operate under track protection rules
  • TLIB1028 Maintain and use hand tools
  • TLID1001 Shift materials safely using manual handling methods
  • TLIE1003 Participate in basic workplace communications
  • TLIF1001 Follow occupational health and safety procedures
  • TLIF2010 Apply fatigue management strategies
  • TLIB2085 Apply track fundamentals
  • TLIU2008 Apply environmental procedures to rail infrastructure

Upon Completion

Upon successful completion of this course you will receive a Statement of Attainment recognising completion of:

TLIC3045 Operate Road/Rail Vehicle

TLIC2054 Access rail track to run track vehicle within defined worksite

TLIC2058 Travel medium or heavy self-propelled on-track equipment

TLIC2059 Propel and operate light on-track equipment

Learning Mode

Classroom-based learning - Theory component are always delivered within a classroom format, however full assessment must be inclusive of practical on hi-rail vehicle. Participants can only be assessed on CERT premises in full if the appropriate vehicle is provided on the day.

Employment based = If practical assessment cannot be conducted on CERT premises, all practicals are to be conducted at a later date on the employers nominated site. All components may be delivered on the nominated employer site if requested.

On Job Workbook: The On Job Workbook covers all practical aspects related to the job and reflects your training. Your workbook needs to be completed over a range of time and variables, this needs to be signed off by an already qualified Track Machine Operator. Must be able to provide evidence from the person (must hold at least the minimum qualification of those being signed off) who has signed the on the On Job Workbook, IE: photo copy of COC and driver’s licence.

Competency Assessment: The final Assessment is one on one and requires a Hi-rail vehicle; you will need to demonstrate your knowledge gained through both theory and practical training. The Hi-rail Vehicle you bring on the day will be classified on your card as Light, Medium or Heavy, and this will be noted on your card

  • Hand signal rail traffic at a worksite or within a possession

Handsignaller Level 2

  • Activities as prescribed for handsignaller level 1
  • Act as an inner or outer handsignaller at a fixed signal
  • Act as a handsignaller at defective signals
  • Pilot rail traffic into, within and out of a possession area
  • Handsignal at level crossings

The combined Handsignaller Level 1 & 2 training is a three day theory course and requires you to complete an On Job Workbook and a one-on-one competency assessment.

Overview

This is a general qualification for a person engaged in basic operations within the rail infrastructure environment undertaking a range of tasks involving known routines and procedures, and taking some responsibility for the quality of work outcomes.

CERT routinely provides this training to existing rail infrastructure workers, however programs designed for new entrants to the industry including trainees and job seekers are available.

Duration

The duration of training and assessment for this course is dependent on participant details.  Existing Rail Infrastructure Workers and persons with existing skills and knowledge will require less training prior to assessment in line with Australian competency-based-training principles.

For new entrants with no previous skills and knowledge the course is typically run over 10 weeks fulltime, however the duration is dependent on a number of factors, including the electives chosen, mode of delivery, assessment approach and individual participant needs.

The inclusion of work-based and self-paced learning modes will also vary duration.

Entry Requirements

There are no entry requirements for this qualification, however to apply the skills and knowledge associated with performance on the job, students must be able to:

  • Read and understand workplace documents including manufacturers’ or workplace procedures, policies, procedures and legislation. 
  • Effective spoken English to communicate and work effectively with others and understand work instructions.
  • Complete workplace forms and documents and respond to workplace signs.

Students will be required to complete a Literacy, Language and Numeracy assessment at the commencement of the course and CERT can assist individuals with learning needs and support.

Nationally Accredited?

Yes. Upon successful completion of all training and assessments, a nationally recognised qualification will be issued.  Where students do not complete all 16 units successfully, a Statement of Attainment will be issued, listing the units they have successfully completed.
